Round Brilliant vs. Princess Cut Diamonds: Shape and Settings
Share
Two Distinct Outlines
A round brilliant has a circular outline, while a princess cut usually presents a square outline with pointed corners. GIA describes the princess cut as a square modified brilliant. Both can create lively reflections, but shape alone does not determine which individual diamond will look brighter.

Read the Photos Carefully
The round solitaire in this gallery is straightforward to recognize. The other center stones have a near square outline, but the images do not establish a princess cut. A grading report and clearer close view should settle the cut before you compare prices or specifications.

Compare the Actual Diamonds
View each stone in motion and under more than one kind of lighting. Look for an appealing pattern of bright and dark areas. A fixed clarity grade does not promise that every inclusion will be invisible, and a percentage claim about light return cannot replace examining the stone.

Consider the Setting
Princess corners need thoughtful protection in the setting. With either shape, compare ring height, prong placement and comfort beside a wedding band. Ask for measurements as well as carat weight so you can understand the face up outline without assuming equal weight means equal visible size.
