Where to Sell Diamonds, Gold and Watches: Compare Your Options
Share
The best place to sell jewelry or a watch depends on the piece, your timing and the amount you would receive after costs. A direct offer, a consignment estimate and an auction projection are different arrangements. Compare them on the same basis before deciding.
Selling directly to a dealer
A dealer can assess the item and make an offer to buy it. This may provide a clearer payment timetable than waiting for a retail customer. The offer reflects the buyer’s costs, inventory needs and resale expectations, so it will not necessarily match an advertised retail price.
Ask whether the quote is final or conditional on testing, what is included and when payment would be made. A specialist may understand a particular maker or watch reference well, but no category of buyer always pays the most.

Consignment and auction
Consignment lets a business offer the piece for sale on your behalf. Discuss commission, asking price, permitted discounts, insurance, the contract period and how you can retrieve an unsold item. A higher proposed selling price is useful only when you understand the likely net proceeds and uncertainty.
An auction may suit some collectible pieces. Ask about seller fees, reserves, estimates, photography, shipping and payment timing. Check whether any comparison price includes the buyer’s premium; that amount is not automatically what a seller receives.

Private and online sales
Selling privately can involve more work: answering questions, documenting condition, arranging delivery and handling payment or disputes. Platform fees and protection rules vary. Read the current terms and use documented arrangements appropriate for the value of the item.
Before sending anything away, establish who holds responsibility for loss or damage, how the item is identified at intake and what happens if you decline the offer.
Prepare information that makes offers comparable
Bring receipts, reports and service records if you have them. For gold jewelry, distinguish metal weight and purity from stones or other components. A wearable designer piece may deserve an assessment beyond its metal content. For diamonds, a grading report describes characteristics; an insurance appraisal is not a cash offer. For watches, reference, condition, parts history and included accessories matter.
