When buying gold jewelry, compare the piece as a finished object as well as a quantity of metal. Purity and weight matter, but so do construction, comfort, stones, design and condition. A price above metal value is not automatically excessive.
Karat Describes Purity
Karat is different from gram weight. An 18K alloy contains 18 parts gold out of 24; a 14K alloy contains 14 parts. A heavier piece is not necessarily purer. Ask whether the stated weight includes stones or other components.

Examine How It Is Made
Ask whether a chain or bangle is hollow or solid in construction. Two pieces with a similar appearance can differ in weight, durability and repair options. Try the clasp and check whether the jewelry sits comfortably without catching.
For a preowned item, ask about thinning, dents, repairs and worn connections. A bright polish does not establish structural condition. A hallmark is useful information to investigate, not a substitute for checking the material and piece.
Understand What You Are Paying For
Retail prices may include design, workmanship, stones, brand, service and business costs alongside the gold. A signed or distinctive piece may be priced differently from a simple chain of the same metal weight.
Compare like with like: similar purity, construction, dimensions, weight and condition. A metal price calculation can provide context, but it does not price the complete jewel or promise what a future buyer would offer.
Get the Details Before Paying
Ask for a written description and clarify what is known about the source or maker. If a seller makes a specific recycled or ethical sourcing claim, ask what evidence supports it. Do not assume that a particular origin follows from the appearance or price.
Confirm return, exchange, alteration and warranty terms. Give yourself time to understand any difference between two offers rather than deciding from a discount percentage alone.
