What a Jewelry Trade Means

A trade usually applies an agreed value for your existing piece toward a purchase. It is different from a cash offer that you can spend elsewhere. Not every item or purchase qualifies, so ask the jeweler to explain eligibility before choosing a replacement.

Bring purchase records, gemstone reports and any designer documentation you have. The buyer still needs to examine the metal, stones, condition and identity of the piece. A previous retail price or insurance appraisal does not determine the trade allowance.

Compare the Full Price

Ask for the replacement’s price and the trade credit as separate figures. Then compare the final balance with the cost of selling your jewelry independently and buying the same replacement. A larger credit can be less attractive if it is paired with a higher purchase price.
