Cushion vs. Asscher Diamonds: Shape and Setting Differences
Share
Cushion and Asscher diamonds can both appeal to someone looking beyond a round center, but their appearance is quite different. A cushion has rounded corners and a pillow shaped outline. An Asscher combines a squarer outline, clipped corners and step facets. The choice starts with which pattern you enjoy seeing as the stone moves.
Compare the outline and facets
GIA’s diamond shape guide explains the distinction between shape and cutting style. Cushion diamonds have variations in their facet arrangements; Asscher diamonds have the broad, orderly reflections associated with step cutting. Neither name alone establishes a diamond’s quality.

What these photographs show
The original gallery contains elongated rectangular rings, including emerald cut examples, rather than a matched cushion and Asscher pair. They are retained here to illustrate prongs, shoulder accents and setting height. An emerald cut photograph should not be used as an example of a square Asscher or a cushion.

Choose the individual diamond
Compare actual dimensions, appearance in ordinary light and the available grading report. Avoid choosing by a fixed color or clarity threshold alone. Two diamonds with the same weight can look different in size and brightness, and a generic price comparison cannot replace a current quote.
