Buying a Loose Diamond: Reports, Shape and Setting

Choosing a loose diamond lets you compare the stone before deciding on its setting. Begin with your budget, preferred shape and intended jewelry. Then consider the diamond’s documented characteristics alongside how it looks in person.

Understand the grading report

A grading report describes characteristics of a stone. It does not mean that every diamond receives a top grade, and it is not an appraisal of its selling price. GIA explains this distinction in its guide to a GIA diamond.

Match the report details to the diamond and use the issuing laboratory’s report check service where available. Ask a qualified professional to help with that comparison.

Compare shape, dimensions and appearance

Carat is weight, not a measurement of visible width. Compare the dimensions and proportions of stones within your preferred shape. View them in ordinary light as well as display lighting, and look for differences you can actually see.

Be clear about identity and treatments

Ask whether the diamond is natural or laboratory grown and whether any treatments are disclosed. Review the relevant report rather than assuming appearance answers those questions. Price comparisons should use stones with comparable descriptions.

Plan the setting at the same time

The jeweler needs the actual stone’s dimensions to assess a suitable setting. Discuss protection for any pointed corners, the height above the finger, ring size and the total project cost.
