How to Compare Offers When Selling a Diamond Engagement Ring
Share
When you receive several offers for a diamond engagement ring, compare them on the same facts. A high estimate based on photographs can change after inspection. A lower firm offer may have fewer conditions. The useful comparison is the final amount you would receive for the same ring.

Prepare One Description for Every Buyer
Gather the diamond report, if available, and identify the center stone separately from the setting. Record its shape and reported weight, along with known color, clarity, origin and treatments. Do not substitute the ring’s total carat weight for the center stone’s weight.
Include metal, designer details, size and known damage or repairs. Natural and laboratory grown diamonds belong in different comparisons. If information is missing, state that it needs evaluation instead of guessing.
Separate Documentation From Price
A laboratory report helps describe a stone. GIA reports do not give an appraisal value. A buyer must still connect the report to the stone and assess its current condition.
An insurance replacement appraisal also does not establish a resale offer. Ask whether a buyer is valuing the complete ring, the center stone and setting separately, or mainly the recoverable materials.

Write Down the Terms
- The quoted amount and when the quote expires.
- Whether physical inspection can change that amount.
- Any commission, testing, shipping or other charge.
- When and how payment would be made.
- How the ring is returned if you decline.
For consignment, distinguish the suggested selling price from your expected proceeds and the uncertainty of waiting for a buyer. For a trade, compare the replacement’s total price and the balance you would pay.
A Simple Comparison Example
A hypothetical $5,000 consignment sale with a 20 percent commission leaves $4,000 before any other costs. A direct $4,200 purchase offer would pay more in that example, despite the lower headline amount. Actual terms must be checked for your transaction.

Do not pay for polishing, resetting or a new report simply because you hope it will increase the offer. Ask whether the expected benefit justifies the cost first.
