How Jewelers Price Diamonds, Gold and Rolex Watches
Share
Diamonds, gold jewelry and Rolex watches are evaluated in different ways. A useful price explanation identifies the item, describes its condition and states what kind of value is being discussed. Retail replacement cost and the amount a buyer offers today are not interchangeable.

Diamond Characteristics and Documentation
For a diamond, the 4Cs describe color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Shape, natural or laboratory grown origin, treatments, condition and the details of the setting can also matter to a buying decision. Carat is a measure of weight, not a guarantee of visible size or beauty.
A grading report records specified characteristics. It is not a promise of quality, authenticity for an entire branded jewel or a resale price. GIA explains the limits of its reports, including that they are not valuations or appraisals. The report must be matched to the stone.
Gold Content and Finished Jewelry Value
For a metal calculation, distinguish gross jewelry weight from the weight of the relevant metal. Stones and nonmetal parts are not gold. Karat describes purity: 18K is 18 parts gold out of 24, while 14K is 14 parts out of 24.
The metal calculation is one part of the picture. Design, maker, construction, condition and demand for a wearable piece may affect an offer. Retail jewelry also includes work and selling costs, so its price is not simply the metal content multiplied by a market quote.

Watch Comparisons Must Be Specific
A Rolex assessment begins with the reference and configuration. Dial, bezel, bracelet, original or replacement parts, mechanical condition and available records help distinguish apparently similar watches. Rarity alone does not establish demand.
Ask whether a comparison is an asking price, a completed sale or a dealer buying offer. Its date and condition matter. There is no single discount from retail that applies to every watch.

Ask for the Amount You Keep
A direct purchase and a consignment proposal involve different timing, costs and uncertainty. Compare the net amount after stated fees, along with payment terms and any inspection conditions. An insurance appraisal should not be treated as the minimum a resale buyer must pay.
Arrange an evaluation at Diamonds by Raymond Lee in Boca Raton and bring the records you have. Ask the team to explain the basis of the offer for each item.
