How to Use a Public EV Charging Station
Share
A public charging stop is easier when you check the connection and payment method before arriving. Equipment differs, so follow the instructions on the station and in your vehicle rather than assuming every network works the same way.
1. Confirm Compatibility
Check the vehicle’s supported charging types, the station connector and any network access requirements. In North America, J1772 is associated with AC charging and CCS1 supports DC charging on compatible vehicles. A network may operate more than one type of equipment.
If an adapter is needed, confirm that it is approved for the vehicle and the intended connection. An AC adapter does not become a DC adapter simply because part of the plug looks similar.

2. Check the Space and Equipment
Park so the cable reaches without stretching across a traffic lane or blocking another space. Follow accessible parking and site signs. Inspect the connector for obvious damage before handling it.
Do not use damaged equipment or attempt a connection in unsafe conditions. Contact the operator for help. Never force a plug, open the charging unit or improvise an electrical repair.
3. Review Payment and Start Instructions
Read the current price and any session, parking or time charges. Use the operator’s official app, supported payment terminal or the vehicle’s approved process. Be cautious of an unfamiliar payment page reached through a sticker on the equipment.
The order of connection and authorization varies. Follow the station’s instructions, select the correct unit if using an app and confirm that the car shows charging has started.

4. Monitor the Session
Check the estimated completion time and charge target. Power may change as the battery fills or as the vehicle manages temperature. A lower rate than the station’s maximum is not automatically a fault.
Keep notifications available if you leave the car. Review the displayed fee rules rather than assuming time charges start only when the battery is full.
5. Stop and Disconnect Correctly
Use the instructed controls to end the session and unlock the connector. If it will not release, follow the vehicle’s guidance or contact support; do not pull it free by force.
Return the cable securely, check that the port is closed and move the vehicle out of the charging space. Keep the receipt or session record if you need to review a charge.

Planning a Local Stop
At the DBRL Electric site on the Diamonds by Raymond Lee property, check current compatibility and availability through the relevant network. Showroom appointments and event RSVPs do not reserve charging access.
For a Tesla using another connector type, read our CCS compatibility guide before choosing an adapter.
