How to Clean Diamond Jewelry Safely at Home?

For diamond jewelry that is in good condition and suitable for washing, mild soap, warm water and a gentle touch are a useful starting point. First check the whole piece, including its other gemstones and setting. A diamond’s durability does not make every cleaning method safe for the jewelry around it.

Check the Setting Before You Start

If a stone moves, a prong catches on fabric or the ring has taken a hard knock, arrange an inspection before cleaning. Do not brush a visibly damaged setting. If you do not know whether the diamond has been treated, or the piece also contains delicate gems, ask a jeweler which method to use.

A Gentle Method for Suitable Diamond Jewelry

  1. Prepare a small bowl of warm water with a little mild dish soap.
  2. Let the suitable piece soak briefly, then use a clean, soft toothbrush reserved for jewelry to loosen residue gently.
  3. Rinse in a separate bowl of clean water so the piece stays away from an open drain.
  4. Dry carefully with a soft cloth that does not shed lint.

Do not force bristles under a stone or scrub fragile prongs. See GIA’s diamond cleaning advice for guidance on handling and gentle cleaning.

What to Avoid

Skip toothpaste, abrasive household cleansers and chlorine bleach. Do not make ammonia or vinegar mixtures your default routine. The right care depends on the entire piece, including the metal, any coatings and the other stones.

Ultrasonic cleaning is not appropriate for every diamond. GIA advises against it for fracture filled diamonds, and vibration can loosen stones. A professional should decide whether steam or ultrasound is suitable. The GIA Diamond Care and Cleaning Guide covers treatment and durability concerns.

When Home Cleaning Is Not Enough

A persistent cloudy appearance does not prove that the diamond is dirty. Do not keep repeating stronger cleaning methods to change its color or clarity. Ask for an inspection if gentle care does not improve the appearance.

Cleaning also cannot repair a worn prong or tighten a loose stone. Keep those concerns separate when describing the problem to a jeweler: what you noticed, when it started and whether the piece was recently knocked or repaired.

Care for Every Stone in the Piece

A ring with diamonds and colored stones needs a routine suitable for all of them. The photograph below shows why looking only at the diamonds is not enough. Ask about any treatments and cleaning limits before soaking a mixed gemstone piece.
