Laboratory Grown and Natural Diamonds: Making the Choice

Natural and laboratory grown diamonds have different origins. Both are diamonds, while materials such as moissanite and cubic zirconia are diamond simulants. Choosing between the two involves your preferences, budget and the information supplied with the particular stone.

Understand Origin and Identification

Natural diamonds form through geological processes. Laboratory grown diamonds are produced using controlled growth methods. GIA explains that their properties are closely comparable and that specialized testing can distinguish their origin.

Do not rely on appearance alone or a simple diamond tester to establish natural origin. Ask for a report or assessment that identifies what the stone is, and confirm that the document relates to the actual diamond.

Compare Individual Stones

Look at proportions, light performance, visible inclusions and color in different lighting. Compare measurements as well as carat weight. A larger weight does not necessarily produce the appearance or setting fit you prefer.

Report formats and terminology vary by laboratory, service and issue date. Read the actual document rather than assuming every natural and laboratory grown diamond receives identical grading language.

Use Current Prices and Specific Claims

Obtain current quotes for comparable stones and complete settings. A fixed discount percentage or an undated price table can quickly become misleading. Neither origin guarantees future resale proceeds, and a retail purchase price is not a buyback promise.

Environmental claims also require evidence. Production method alone does not establish the total impact of a particular stone; energy sources and other supply chain factors matter. Ask what supports any claim that influences your decision.

Review the Finished Purchase

Confirm the origin in the written description, along with return terms, any upgrade policy and service coverage. Ask about care for the complete ring, including its setting and any other stones.
