Mistakes to Avoid When Selling a Luxury Watch

A luxury watch sale starts with the particular watch you own. Its reference, configuration and condition matter more than a headline about the brand. Before accepting an offer, take time to understand what is included and how the buyer reached the figure.

Using the Wrong Price as Your Starting Point

The amount you paid, an insurance replacement value and a dealer’s retail listing describe different things. None automatically equals what a buyer will pay you today. Compare the same reference, metal, dial, bracelet and approximate condition. A similar looking watch can be a poor comparison.

Record whether a number is an asking price, a documented sale or a direct offer. A high advertised price is not proof that a watch has sold at that amount. No brand guarantees appreciation.

Changing the Watch Before an Evaluation

Polishing or servicing may cost more than it adds to an offer. Ask for an assessment in its present condition before authorizing work. Disclose problems, replacement parts and previous repairs. Do not try to open the case or polish away marks yourself.

Leaving Useful Records at Home

Bring matching papers, service invoices, spare links and the original box when available. These help describe the set being sold. They do not authenticate a watch by themselves, and missing packaging does not necessarily prevent a sale.

Comparing Offers Without Comparing Terms

  • Is the amount a firm offer after inspection or an estimate?
  • Will any fees be deducted?
  • When does the offer expire?
  • How and when will payment be confirmed?
  • Who holds the watch while a decision is pending?

Consignment proceeds depend on finding a buyer and on the agreed commission. Trade credit should be considered alongside the full price of the replacement watch.

Rushing the Handover

Keep an itemized record of what you leave with a buyer, including accessories. Confirm payment through your own payment provider rather than relying on a screenshot supplied by someone else. Agree on the handover process before transferring the watch.
