Oval vs Round Diamonds: Choosing an Engagement Ring

An oval diamond gives an engagement ring a longer outline, while a round brilliant creates a balanced circular shape. Both can be beautiful. The useful comparison is between the actual stones and settings you are considering, rather than a prediction about which shape will lead this year’s trends.

Compare measurements as well as carat weight

Carat measures weight, not the area you see from above. Two diamonds of equal weight can look different in size because their depth and proportions differ. An oval may cover more length along the finger, but there is no fixed percentage by which every oval looks larger.

Ask for length and width in millimeters, then try rings with comparable measurements. Decide whether you prefer a shorter oval or a more elongated outline. A photograph enlarged on a screen can hide that distinction.

Watch how each stone handles light

Move the diamond under different lighting. In an oval, look for a dark band across the middle, often called a bow tie. Its strength and persistence matter more than simply whether some contrast appears. Avoid judging sparkle from one carefully lit photograph.

A round brilliant’s cut grade can help with comparisons, but read the report’s scope. GIA’s standard cut grading applies to D to Z color round brilliants; polish and symmetry grades on an oval report are not an equivalent overall cut grade.

Try the setting you intend to wear

An oval has rounded ends, unlike the pointed ends of a marquise. Any diamond can still be damaged, and secure setting work matters for both shapes. Compare the ring’s height, how its prongs feel and whether a wedding band fits comfortably beside it.

A halo or decorated band changes the overall appearance. When comparing prices, separate the center stone specifications from the surrounding stones and mounting.

Choose with your eyes and your budget

There is no universal winner for price or resale. Origin, color, clarity, proportions and condition all affect the comparison. Ask for a written description of the diamond and complete ring, including natural or laboratory grown origin and any disclosed treatments.
