How to Choose an Engagement Ring: A Practical Guide
Share
Choosing an engagement ring becomes easier when you separate the decisions: budget, center stone, setting and fit. Start with what the wearer likes and how the ring will be used. There is no requirement to spend a set number of months of salary.
Set a Total Budget
Include the finished ring, any planned customization and sizing. Ask which services are included and which cost extra. If you are buying a wedding band at the same time, compare the complete pair before committing.
Understand the Diamond You Are Comparing
Carat is weight, while measurements describe size. Color and clarity grades help compare diamonds, but the appearance of a mounted stone also matters. Look at it without magnification as well as with the jeweler’s help.
Cut quality and diamond shape are different concepts. GIA’s traditional overall cut grade applies to standard round brilliant diamonds in its D to Z color range; do not assume the same grade applies to an oval, pear or emerald cut. Review the actual report and see fancy shapes in motion. GIA’s diamond quality guide explains the factors involved.
Choose the Setting and Metal Together
A solitaire puts the focus on one stone. A halo adds a border of smaller diamonds, while side stones extend the design across the finger. Compare the height and profile as well as the view from above.
Ask about the particular metal alloy and its upkeep. White gold may need renewed rhodium plating over time. Platinum can develop a surface patina. Any setting needs occasional inspection, especially around prongs and small stones.
Finish with Fit and Written Details
Try the ring with a wedding band and check comfort when bending your fingers. Confirm the center stone’s origin, any disclosed treatments, report details, sizing limits, completion date and applicable return terms in writing.
