Rolex GMT-Master II: History, Travel Functions and Archive Photos

The GMT-Master II’s Travel Function
Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II in 1982, with an hour hand that could be adjusted independently of the minute and 24 hour hands. That milestone is separate from the original GMT-Master’s earlier history. The distinction helps avoid combining several generations into one specification list.

Read the 24 Hour Bezel
The black and red bezel example and the black bezel example in this gallery show GMT designs. A 24 hour scale serves a different purpose from a dive timing bezel. Ask for a demonstration of the exact reference’s controls rather than assuming every travel watch adjusts in the same way.

Keep the Submariner Photos in Context
The blue bezel watch and the warm colored black bezel watch are Submariner comparisons, not GMT-Master II examples. Their original photos are preserved with clear captions. The heavily decorated watch also needs its own records before a precise reference or original configuration can be stated.

Compare Generations Carefully
Bezel materials, movements and bracelet options have changed over time. A current calibre or power reserve cannot be assigned to every older GMT-Master II. Confirm the reference, service history and component details for the individual watch you are considering.
