Rolex Submariner: Design, Generations and Condition
Share
The Rolex Submariner is recognizable by its timing bezel, clear dial and Oyster bracelet. The two archived examples shown here have blue bezels and two tone bracelets, but different dial treatments: one has a blue face with luminous markers, while the other has a lighter face with gem markers.

Read the Individual Watch
A model family can span many references and generations. Do not apply the case size, movement or luminous material of a current Submariner to every older watch in a photograph. Confirm those details from the actual reference and inspection.

Two Different Dial Looks
The blue dial creates a close color relationship with the bezel. The lighter dial provides stronger contrast and adds sparkle through its markers. The pictures document their appearance, but do not verify dial originality or the factory status of every gemstone component.

Condition Before Water Use
A Submariner’s diving heritage does not replace a current assessment of a preowned watch. Seals, crown condition and past work matter. Have water resistance checked before exposing the watch to water, and follow advice for the actual piece.

What to Check Before Buying
Inspect the bezel, bracelet, clasp and case, and request service records where available. Confirm whether parts have been replaced and whether the bracelet has enough links for your wrist. Test the date and time setting functions with guidance appropriate to the reference.

Compare like with like: reference, dial configuration, accessories and condition all affect a useful comparison. These photographs preserve the original archive and do not imply that both watches are currently available.
