Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681: An Archive Review

The watch identified in our archive as Rolex reference 116681 is a Yacht-Master II. Its white dial, blue numbered bezel and contrasting bracelet make it visibly different from the simpler Yacht-Master. The “II” matters: the display is built around a regatta countdown.

Read the layout before comparing features

The numbered countdown scale arcs around the dial, while a small seconds display sits near the bottom. The crown and pushers give the case a more complex profile than a three hand watch. These details are clear in the original photographs.

Keep the reference and generation together

This is an older archive example. Rolex has since introduced a new Yacht-Master II generation, described in its current model overview. Instructions and specifications for that later watch should not be applied to the earlier reference.

Ask for documentation confirming the reference and the movement in the individual watch. Use the matching owner’s instructions for the countdown controls rather than following a generic online sequence.

Look at bracelet fit and condition

The broad polished center links contrast with the cooler outer links. Try the watch with the bracelet adjusted and check how its case sits against your wrist. Ask about included links, clasp condition and any replacement components.

Check the complication as well as the time

A watch specialist should assess the countdown operation, pushers, crown and service history. Water resistance also needs to be evaluated for the actual watch in its present condition. A nautical name does not settle that question.

The photos preserve the look of the earlier two tone example. They are not evidence of present availability, a specific service condition or a future investment return.
