Choosing a Gold Buyer: Questions Before You Sell
Share
A useful gold evaluation should leave you understanding the offer. Before handing over jewelry, confirm who you are dealing with, where the transaction will happen and how the buyer will assess your pieces.

Ask to understand the calculation
Request the identified purity, weight and units used. Ask whether stones or other components have been excluded from the metal weight, and whether the complete piece has resale value beyond its materials.
Compare final amounts rather than headline prices. A quoted rate means little without knowing the purity, weight basis and deductions attached to it. Ask how long an offer remains valid.

Review the transaction before agreeing
- Confirm the business’s contact details and location independently.
- Keep a record of the items you bring or send.
- Ask whether testing will mark or alter the piece before authorizing it.
- Review the payment method, timing and any charges.
- Get the agreed transaction details in writing.
If shipping is involved, confirm responsibility for transit, coverage limits and the procedure for returning an item you decline to sell. Do not assume that every shipping label includes suitable insurance.

Take time to compare
Reviews can provide context, but a rating alone does not explain an individual offer. Be cautious about unexplained deductions or pressure to decide before your questions are answered. You can pause and compare another evaluation.
An insurance appraisal is not the same as a current purchase offer. Ask the buyer to explain that difference if the amounts are far apart.
