Before You Sell a Diamond: Documents and Offer Checklist

Before asking what a diamond will sell for, gather the details that identify it. A clear record saves time and makes competing offers easier to compare. It also helps distinguish what is known from what still needs an examination.

Gather the Available Records

Bring the diamond or finished jewelry, laboratory report, purchase receipt and any repair records. Keep center stone weight separate from the total weight of all diamonds in a piece. Disclose any known treatments, chips or replaced stones.

A grading report describes quality characteristics; it does not state a resale offer. GIA explains the difference between its laboratory reports and appraisals. An insurance replacement figure serves a different purpose from an offer to purchase your jewelry.

Compare Like with Like

Shape, size, origin, color, clarity and condition all matter. Asking prices online are not proof that comparable pieces sold for those amounts. A natural diamond and a laboratory grown diamond should not be treated as the same resale comparison simply because their listed grades match.

Ask whether the buyer is evaluating a loose diamond, a complete signed piece or the combined materials. If an assessment is limited by the mounting, discuss the next step before authorizing any stone removal.

Check the Offer Before Accepting

  • What is the final amount you will receive?
  • Is the offer conditional on additional testing?
  • Are there commissions, shipping or other charges?
  • What is the payment method and timing?
  • Will you receive an itemized record of the transaction?

Do not pay for polishing, repairs or a new report automatically. Ask whether the likely benefit justifies the cost for this particular piece. You can also decide to keep an item after learning more about it.
