Solitaire Diamond Rings: Shapes, Settings and Choosing a Stone

A solitaire diamond ring puts one diamond at the center of the design. A plain metal band keeps that focus clear. A ring with a prominent center and accent diamonds offers a related look, but it is not literally a single stone setting.

Choose the Outline

Round, oval, pear and marquise diamonds offer different silhouettes on the hand. Princess cuts have an angular outline, while cushions have softened corners. Emerald and radiant shapes can both be rectangular, but their facet patterns create different effects.

GIA’s diamond quality guide describes how the 4Cs work together. Compare the actual diamond in different lighting, rather than selecting by shape or weight alone. Two stones of equal carat weight can have different visible dimensions.

Look Beyond a Clarity Label

A diamond does not need the highest possible clarity grade to suit every buyer. The location, size and visibility of inclusions matter. Open step cut facets can make some characteristics easier to see, but emerald cut diamonds exist across a range of qualities; they are not cut only from flawless material.

Ask to review the grading report when available and confirm whether the diamond is natural or laboratory grown. Compare the report with the actual stone and discuss any known treatments. The ring’s appearance, durability and price should all fit your priorities.

Setting and Band

A narrow band can make the center appear more prominent, while a wider band gives a different balance. Prongs, bezels and setting height influence appearance and practicality. Check whether the ring catches on clothing and whether a wedding band will sit comfortably beside it.

Pointed diamond shapes deserve protection at their tips. Confirm sizing options, inspect the setting and ask what future maintenance is appropriate.

Try the Complete Ring

The gallery compares a plain band with a diamond accented band. Neither approach is automatically better. Visit Diamonds by Raymond Lee in Boca Raton to compare available rings or discuss a design built around the proportions you prefer.
