Rolex History: Facts, Milestones and Common Misconceptions
Share
Rolex history is interesting enough without exaggerated claims. Our original 2020 article mixed useful milestones with unsupported statements about manufacturing time, charity, prices and auction records. This revised guide separates documented history from claims that should not be repeated as fact.
London Origins and the Rolex Name
Hans Wilsdorf established his watch business in London in 1905. The Rolex name followed in 1908, and the company moved to Geneva in 1919. Rolex’s own account emphasizes his ambition to make wristwatches reliable as well as attractive. See the official early history.
Oyster and Perpetual
The Oyster case introduced in 1926 and the Perpetual rotor introduced in 1931 were important developments in the company’s history. Oyster concerns the protective case construction; Perpetual refers to automatic winding. They are not interchangeable descriptions of a model. Rolex recounts both milestones in its Oyster history.
These historical achievements do not mean an older watch is safe to submerge without checking its present seals and condition. A water resistance specification and a current pressure test answer different questions.
Manufacturing Claims Need Evidence
The earlier article said every Rolex takes a year to make and described the watches as entirely handmade. We have removed those blanket statements. A manufacturing process includes many stages, and neither a slogan nor an unsourced duration explains how a particular watch was produced.
The previous claims about exact logo timing, current brand rankings and tax treatment have also been removed. They were not supported well enough to belong in a factual buying guide.
Auction Records Are Specific to the Watch
An exceptional auction result is not a price guide for every example of a model. Ownership history, condition and rarity can make a particular watch unusual. The original article’s assertion that a gold GMT Master was the world’s most expensive watch was incorrect and should not be used to estimate another watch’s value.
What Matters When Shopping
Compare the actual reference, dial, bracelet, condition and available records. Confirm which parts are original or replacements and what service work has been completed. Historical interest can help you choose a watch you enjoy, but it does not promise a profit or a particular lifespan.
The original black dial Rolex dive watch photograph is retained. It illustrates the brand rather than every milestone discussed here.
