Recognizing the Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master examples in this archive use prominent raised bezel numerals and contrasting polished surfaces. The result is visually different from a Submariner’s bezel insert. Both can have sporting designs, but they should not be given the same specifications.

A Bezel for Elapsed Time

Rolex describes the Yacht-Master’s bezel as bidirectional, with a 60 minute scale. That is distinct from the additional functions of the Yacht-Master II. A shared name does not make the two collections interchangeable, so check the complete model name when comparing watches.

Try the Case and Bracelet

The case diameter alone does not tell you how the watch will sit. Compare thickness, bracelet length and clasp adjustment. The warm and white colored examples shown here also illustrate how finish and color change the overall appearance; confirm the actual metals from their records.

Use the Right Generation’s Details

Sizes and movements vary by reference and period. Avoid assigning current specifications to every older Yacht-Master. If you plan to wear a previously owned watch in water, ask about its condition and pressure testing. An original depth rating is not evidence of its current seal condition.
