Tiffany Bird on a Rock: Citrine Brooch Design Details
Share
A diamond bird perched above a golden stone gives Tiffany & Co.’s Bird on a Rock its distinctive silhouette. This archived example uses a rectangular citrine beneath the bird, with a yellow gold colored crest and beak adding warm accents.
Tiffany dates Jean Schlumberger’s original Bird on a Rock design to 1965 in its collection history. The design’s appeal comes from the contrast between a small, animated bird and the much larger faceted stone below it.

The Archived Piece
The original store description recorded a 64.04 carat citrine, 2.69 carats of diamonds, platinum and 18 karat yellow gold, with a total weight of 38.8 grams. These are specifications recorded for that individual archived piece, not standard measurements for every Bird on a Rock brooch. They should be checked against the item’s documentation if it is offered again.

Details to Examine
The reverse photograph shows the pin assembly and Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger signature. Those details are useful parts of an evaluation, but a visible signature alone does not establish authenticity. An examination should consider construction, condition, marks, stone information and provenance together.

The close view of the head shows a pink eye, diamond detailing and the gold crest. A photograph can show those design details without establishing the eye stone’s identity or any gemstone treatment history.

Care and Availability
GIA advises against steam cleaning citrine. For a brooch combining different stones, metalwork and a pin mechanism, ask a jeweler to check its condition and choose an appropriate cleaning method. Check that the clasp is secure before wearing it on suitable fabric.
