Engagement Ring Styles: Halos, Solitaires and Diamond Bands
Share
Engagement ring styles are easier to compare when you separate the center stone’s shape from the way it is set. A halo, solitaire or decorated band can change the appearance of the same shape, as well as how the ring fits beside a wedding band.
Halo Settings
A halo surrounds the center stone with smaller stones. In the rectangular example below, the border follows the center’s outline. Look at the spacing between the center and its surround, and check the ring from the side as well as the front.

Solitaire Rings
A solitaire places the attention on one center stone. The prongs, basket and band still make a difference: they determine how high the stone sits and how much metal you see around it.

Decorated Bands and Color
Stones along the band add detail beyond the center setting. Try the ring on to check the width and how the stone set section feels against neighboring fingers.

Color can come from the center or the surrounding stones. The green surround in the next photograph changes the look of a round center. Confirm gemstone identities and treatments from the piece’s records rather than assuming them from color.

Choose for Everyday Wear
Check the setting height, possible resizing and how the intended wedding band sits alongside it. Bring pictures of the elements you like to a consultation, whether that is a narrow band, a defined halo or an open solitaire setting.
