Seven Distinctive Rolex Designs and What Sets Them Apart

Some Rolex designs are recognized as much by their color as by their name. Our original article promised ten examples but described seven. Here are those seven designs, with the important distinctions between model names, collector nicknames and custom modifications.

1. Rainbow Daytona

The factory Rainbow Daytona uses a graduated sapphire bezel. The 2018 Everose version has 36 baguette sapphires around that bezel, not eleven. Earlier versions used other gold colors. A custom rainbow bezel fitted to a different Daytona does not make it the same factory reference. See Rolex’s 2018 presentation.

2. Green Submariner “Hulk”

The 116610LV combines a green dial with a green ceramic bezel insert. “Hulk” is a collector nickname. It was not the first Rolex to use green, and ceramic describes the bezel insert rather than the dial.

3. Green Dial Yellow Gold GMT Master II

The green dial 116718LN pairs yellow gold with a black bezel. Its appeal is the contrast between those colors. The luminous markers and Mercedes style hour hand are shared with other references, not exclusive features of this version.

4. Blue and Black GMT Master II “Batman”

The blue and black bezel distinguishes this GMT design. Its second time zone function is useful when traveling. The published water resistance for the relevant GMT models is 100 metres, not 100 feet; an older watch still needs its condition checked before water exposure.

5. Red and Blue GMT “Pepsi”

The nickname covers several generations. Vintage aluminum bezel inserts differ from modern ceramic ones, and bracelet, metal and movement vary by reference. Color alone cannot identify the complete watch.

6. Two Tone Sea Dweller

The combination of steel and yellow gold brings a warmer look to a substantial dive watch. It remains a separate collection from the Submariner shown in this article’s original cover photo.

7. Cellini Moonphase

The Cellini Moonphase, introduced in 2017, uses a moon display and a dress watch silhouette. Its meteorite moon detail is different from a full meteorite dial. This is a historical design selection, not a current production or availability announcement.

Choose a design for its fit and character. Rarity, nicknames and precious materials do not guarantee resale profit.
