Jewelry Appraisals in Boca Raton: What to Expect

A jewelry appraisal is a written opinion of value for a stated purpose and date. It can help describe a piece for insurance or another agreed use. It is not a promise that a buyer will pay that amount, and obtaining a report does not automatically put insurance in place.

Start with the Purpose

Tell the appraiser who will use the report and why. An insurance replacement estimate and a resale assessment answer different questions. For an estate, donation or legal matter, ask the relevant adviser what kind of report and qualifications are required before commissioning the work.

Agree on the fee, scope and expected completion time. A simple ring and a collection with unfamiliar stones may need different amounts of examination and research. Ask whether additional testing would cost extra.

Examination and Records

Bring available purchase receipts, gem reports and records of repairs or alterations. The appraiser may record dimensions, weight, metal markings, stone characteristics, condition and photographs. Mounted stones can limit what can be measured or graded, and those limitations should be explained.

Qualifications and Independence

Ask about gemological education, appraisal training and experience with your type of jewelry. These are related but separate qualifications. GIA explains that it does not certify its graduates or perform jewelry appraisals. A claim of being a GIA certified appraiser needs clarification.

If the appraiser also wants to buy the piece, understand that relationship. A purchase offer and an appraisal should be clearly identified rather than presented as the same service.

Read the Finished Report

Check that the description matches your jewelry and that the purpose, valuation date and relevant limitations are clear. Ask the appraiser to explain unfamiliar terms. If the report is for insurance, confirm acceptance, coverage and any update requirements directly with your insurer.
