Where Can I Recycle Diamonds? Selling and Reusing Existing Stones
Share
If you no longer wear a diamond ring, earrings or a pendant, you may be able to sell the piece or reuse its stones in another design. People sometimes call this diamond recycling. It usually means giving an existing stone another use, rather than refining it in the way precious metal can be refined.
Decide Whether You Want to Sell or Keep the Stone
Selling the complete piece and resetting a diamond are different decisions. Before taking jewelry apart, ask whether it should be evaluated intact. Its design, maker, condition and accompanying documents may matter alongside the center stone.
If the diamond has personal meaning, a new setting may be worth discussing. Ask which parts could be reused, what new materials would be needed and how much the work would cost before deciding.

Bring the Information You Already Have
Gather available laboratory reports, purchase receipts and repair records. Tell the buyer about alterations or damage. You can still ask about an evaluation if some paperwork is missing; do not assume you must buy a new report before speaking with the buyer.
Keep loose stones in secure individual containers. Avoid removing a stone yourself or attempting an aggressive cleaning to make it look more appealing.
Understand What an Offer Covers
Ask whether the offer is for the entire piece, the diamond alone or several items together. Confirm any conditions, costs and payment arrangements. A report or insurance appraisal is not the same as a current buying offer, and a sale does not guarantee a profit over the original purchase price.
When comparing buyers, use the amount you would actually receive and the stated terms. A high headline estimate is less useful if it remains subject to deductions or further examination.

Reuse Claims Should Be Specific
Keeping an existing diamond in use is a clear description of what reuse achieves. A particular sale should not be advertised as proving a measured reduction in mining, emissions or environmental impact without supporting evidence. Ask how the piece or stone is expected to be used if that matters to your decision.
