Gold karat describes purity, while weight tells you how much material is being assessed. Both matter when selling gold jewelry. A heavier piece of lower karat gold may contain more gold than a lighter piece of higher purity, so karat alone does not determine the total offer.

What the Karat Number Means

Gold purity is expressed in parts out of 24. As the FTC explains in its precious metal jewelry guide, gold is commonly mixed with other metals for use in jewelry.

• 24K is the pure gold designation.
• 22K is approximately 91.7 percent gold.
• 18K is 75 percent gold.
• 14K is approximately 58.3 percent gold.
• 10K is approximately 41.7 percent gold.

These are nominal proportions. A stamp is a useful starting point, not a substitute for testing. Plating and filled constructions must be distinguished from solid gold alloy.

Weight Needs Context

Ask what weight is being used and in which units. Stones and other components contribute to total jewelry weight but are not gold. Comparing two offers is easier when both identify the same pieces, tested purity and relevant metal weight.

For a simple illustration, 10 grams of 18K gold alloy contains a nominal 7.5 grams of pure gold. That calculation describes gold content, not the cash offer. Actual proceeds depend on the buyer’s assessment and terms.

Consider the Whole Piece

A signed design, valuable gemstone or collectible piece may deserve an evaluation beyond metal content. Ask whether the offer reflects resale of the complete jewelry or recovery of materials. Do not remove stones or cut apart a piece before that discussion.

Condition can matter greatly to resale as jewelry. A broken clasp does not erase the gold content, but the cost of restoration and the design’s appeal may affect a whole piece offer.
