Authentication, Grading and Appraisals: What Sellers Should Know

Authentication, gemstone grading, appraisals and purchase offers answer different questions. Understanding those differences helps when selling a luxury watch or diamond. No single stamp, document or quick visual test answers everything about the item.

Authentication Concerns Identity

For a watch, assessment may involve the case, dial, movement, bracelet, markings and construction. A genuine watch can contain replacement or aftermarket components, so ask how those are described. A serial number alone is not a complete check, and not every evaluator has access to manufacturer records.

Bring available service documents and disclose modifications. Ask what was examined and whether further specialist work is needed. A photograph or a watch’s weight cannot provide the same information as a suitable physical examination.

Grading Describes Gem Characteristics

A diamond report can record identity and quality characteristics. Natural and laboratory grown diamonds need accurate descriptions, and treatments should be disclosed. Mounted stones may present examination limits.

Have a report matched to the actual stone rather than assuming a paper bearing similar dimensions belongs to it. GIA’s report terms explain that a report is not a guarantee, valuation or appraisal.

An Appraisal Has a Purpose and Date

An appraisal is an opinion of value for a defined use. An insurance replacement value is not the amount a resale buyer must pay. Ask about the appraiser’s relevant qualifications and any limitations in the assessment.

A purchase offer is a separate proposal to buy under stated terms. It can take account of resale demand, condition and the buyer’s costs as well as the item’s characteristics.

Keep the Evidence Together

Retain receipts, reports and records of repairs. Original packaging can help describe a complete set but does not establish authenticity. For jewelry, a hallmark is useful evidence to examine, not a substitute for appropriate testing.

Clear descriptions can reduce misunderstandings, but no assessment guarantees a higher price or eliminates every dispute. Ask for findings and transaction terms in writing.
