How a Watch Is Made: Movement, Case and Final Checks

A watch combines a timekeeping system, a case and the parts you handle every day. Understanding those components helps you ask better questions at any budget. The Rolex watches shown here illustrate construction and design details; they are not examples of a fixed entry level price category.

The movement keeps time

A mechanical movement uses a wound mainspring and a regulating mechanism. An automatic mechanical movement adds a winding system driven by a rotor. A quartz movement uses an electronic timekeeping system. The best choice depends on how you want to use and maintain the watch, not on a rule that one type is always better.

The case protects the assembly

Case material, crystal, seals and construction vary between references. A sporty appearance does not establish a water resistance rating. Read the exact model's specifications and follow its usage guidance, particularly when buying an older watch whose seals and service history may be uncertain.

Bracelets and clasps also deserve attention. Try the adjustment, examine the fit between components and check whether the bracelet has enough links for your wrist.

Finishing and assembly affect the result

Brushed and polished surfaces create different textures. Dial printing, hand alignment and the feel of the crown are details you can examine in person. Manufacturing may combine machine work and hand work; do not assume that every part is handmade or produced in house unless the maker documents it.

Testing should match the claim

Ask what accuracy, function or water resistance checks apply to the model. A general statement about Swiss watches does not tell you the tests performed on one particular reference.

Inspect the watch you will own

Construction specifications describe the design, while a used watch's condition describes the example in front of you. Consider both. Ask our showroom team about a watch's reference, condition and service information before making your choice.
