Blue tourmaline — the intensely saturated variety of the elbaite family known as indicolite — is one of the more underappreciated colored stones in fine jewelry. At 3.54 carats in an emerald cut, this stone commands immediate attention. The emerald cut was designed specifically to showcase a stone's depth of color: its long, open facets act like windows rather than mirrors, pulling the eye into the interior of the gem rather than scattering light off the surface. On a deep teal-blue indicolite, that effect is remarkable.
