Audemars Piguet History: Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore
Share
A Few Useful Milestones
Audemars Piguet dates its founding to 1875. The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, followed by the Royal Oak Offshore in 1993. Keeping those dates separate makes the company’s history easier to follow and avoids confusing a model anniversary with the age of the watchmaker.

Royal Oak and Offshore
The original Royal Oak and the later Offshore are related in design language but are not interchangeable model names. The photographs in this archive show Offshore chronographs with prominent pushers, contrasting dial details and dark straps. They are not photographs of the original 1972 Royal Oak.

Look at the Design Details
Notice the angular bezel, visible fasteners and different layers of the case. The subsidiary displays and Arabic numerals give these examples a busy sporting appearance. Other Audemars Piguet models can look quite different, so no single diameter or chronograph movement describes the entire brand.

Use History to Frame the Questions
A historical milestone can explain a collection, but it does not identify an individual watch. Check the exact reference, case material, movement and service records when considering a previously owned example. Old corporate figures, celebrity associations and unsupported claims of first inventions do not add useful evidence about its condition.
