How to Keep Your Jewelry Sanitary

Jewelry collects residue as you wear it, but a household cleaning shortcut is not always suitable for a ring, bracelet or watch. Start with the materials and condition of the piece. A method that works for one item may damage another.

This guide covers routine jewelry care. It does not provide a disinfection protocol or a guarantee that cleaning jewelry prevents illness.

Know What You Are Cleaning

Before choosing a cleaner, identify the metal, every gemstone and any known treatments. Check the maker’s instructions or ask a jeweler if you are unsure. Pearls, porous gems, glued components and delicate older settings need particular care.

Look for a bent prong, a loose stone or a damaged clasp before cleaning. If anything seems wrong, set the piece aside for inspection rather than scrubbing around the problem.

Skip the Household Cleaning Recipes

Do not use toothpaste, abrasive powders or vigorous scrubbing on fine jewelry. GIA warns that abrasives can scratch metals and chlorine bleach can damage gold alloys. Ammonia is also too harsh for some delicate gems and vintage pieces.

Do not assume that vinegar, laundry detergent or an effervescent tablet is suitable simply because it is available at home. Get care instructions for the specific piece instead. GIA’s jewelry care guide explains why the material and any treatments matter.

Give Watches Their Own Care Routine

A watch contains a movement, seals and sometimes a leather strap, so do not place it in a jewelry soaking bowl. Follow the instructions for its exact model.

Rolex’s care guidance describes using a soft cloth and, for suitable watches, soapy water and a soft brush on the case and bracelet, with the winding crown properly secured. That is not a reason to assume an older watch with an unknown service history is ready for immersion. Have its water resistance checked if you are unsure.

Build a Routine Around the Piece

Keep a clean cloth with your jewelry supplies and store each piece separately after care. Avoid trying a stronger product just because a mark remains. Tarnish, scratches, residue and damage are different problems and may need different attention.
