How to Assess the Quality of a Preowned Luxury Watch
A polished case and an attractive dial can make a preowned watch look impressive. Assessing its quality takes more: an accurate identity, clear condition disclosures, appropriate mechanical checks and terms you understand before buying.
Confirm What Is Being Offered
Ask for the reference, movement type, case material and included accessories. The description should distinguish original components, genuine service replacements and aftermarket changes. A serial number or warranty card supports the investigation but does not authenticate a watch by itself.
For any claim of certification, ask who provides it and what it covers. A dealer’s inspection is different from a manufacturer’s own certified preowned program.
Examine Wear and Previous Work
Look at case shape, lug symmetry, crystal condition, bracelet wear and the clasp. Surface scratches are only part of the picture. Heavy refinishing can change contours, and a bracelet may need attention even when its outer surfaces look bright.
Photos help you ask questions but cannot reveal every issue. Request clear views and a written description rather than relying on a flattering angle or strong showroom lighting.
Ask About Testing
Find out which functions were checked, when testing took place and what the results showed. A moving seconds hand does not demonstrate accurate timekeeping or healthy internal parts. Some genuine luxury watches use quartz movements, so a ticking hand is not a universal authenticity test either.
If you expect to wear the watch around water, discuss its current suitability and any relevant testing. Original specifications are not proof that an older watch still performs to them.
Review Service and Buying Terms
- What work has actually been completed, and is it documented?
- What maintenance or repairs are recommended next?
- Who provides the warranty, and what is excluded?
- What are the inspection and return arrangements?
- Are enough bracelet links included for your wrist?
Compare the total cost with similarly specified watches, including any needed service or parts. A complete set may appeal to you, but it does not make every asking price reasonable.
