Swiss Watch Repair and Care: A Collector’s Guide

Swiss watches do not all need the same care. Movement type, age, construction, condition and use affect the work a watch requires. Start with the instructions for the specific model and a qualified assessment of the watch you own.

Use the Right Service Schedule

A universal three to five year interval is too broad. For example, Rolex recommends service approximately every ten years, depending on the model and use. That guidance is not a reason to postpone inspection of a watch that develops a problem.

Tell the watchmaker about stopping, unusual timing changes, a damaged crown, an impact or visible moisture. Avoid operating or opening a compromised watch yourself. Quartz and mechanical watches also have different maintenance requirements.

Agree on the Scope Before Work Starts

An estimate should identify the proposed work, parts, likely timing and any limits on what can be restored. A full movement service differs from a regulation, battery replacement or exterior cleaning. Ask which tests will be performed afterward and what warranty applies.

Preserve the Details That Matter to You

For a collector’s watch, discuss the dial, hands, bezel and case finish before approving changes. Mechanical repairs and cosmetic refinishing are separate decisions. Explain if you want the original appearance preserved, and confirm whether that request is compatible with the proposed service.

Do not assume an independent workshop offers a manufacturer’s service or warranty. Ask who performs the work and how replacement components will be described on the final record.

Water Resistance Needs Its Own Check

Original depth ratings do not establish the present condition of seals, crown or case. Exterior cleaning does not prove water resistance. Follow model specific advice and discuss suitable testing before swimming with an older or recently repaired watch.

Everyday Care and Records

A soft dry cloth is a cautious starting point for an unfamiliar watch. Avoid immersion, chemicals or home polishing until you know what is appropriate for its case, strap and condition. Store watches so they do not knock against one another.

Keep service invoices and notes about replaced parts. Contact Diamonds by Raymond Lee to discuss your watch’s symptoms and the available repair options in Boca Raton before authorizing work.
