Marquise Diamonds: Shape, Setting and What to Inspect
Share
A marquise diamond has an elongated outline with two pointed ends. The shape can create a long visual line on the finger, but its appearance depends on the individual stone. The round and oval rings pictured here are comparison styles, not marquise diamonds.
Start with the outline
Compare the stone's length and width and decide whether you prefer a slender or fuller outline. Check whether the ends and curved sides look balanced. There is no single proportion that suits every hand or taste.

Look at the center in ordinary light
Some marquise diamonds show a dark area across the center, often called a bow tie. View the stone while moving it and at a normal wearing distance. GIA's marquise diamond buying guide explains this effect and why direct observation matters.
Do not rely on a universal sparkle score or a claim that every marquise looks a fixed percentage larger than another shape. Compare actual dimensions and appearance under the same conditions.

Protect the pointed ends
Ask the jeweler how the setting will protect the tips. Inspect those areas for damage and discuss any inclusions that may affect durability. Try the finished design to see whether it catches on clothing or sits comfortably beside another ring.
Compare the complete ring
A north to south setting and an east to west setting create very different looks. Side stones and halos also change the overall width. Consider the ring as a whole rather than buying by center stone weight alone.

Confirm the details before buying
Review stone origin, any report, condition, metal and sizing options. A lower price than a round diamond is not guaranteed for every pair of stones. Ask our team about available marquise rings and compare examples within your complete ring budget.
