Rolex Submariner vs GMT Master II: Comparing Resale Value

Neither the Rolex Submariner nor the GMT Master II wins every resale comparison. A particular reference, bought at a particular price, can perform very differently from another watch in the same family. Before selling or trading, compare the watches themselves rather than the popularity of their names.

Start With the Exact Watch

The Submariner grew from Rolex’s diving watch design, introduced in 1953. The GMT Master II uses an additional hand and a 24 hour bezel to help read another time zone. These functions explain their different appeal; they do not establish a resale ranking.

Record the reference, metal, dial, bezel, bracelet and approximate production period. Date and no date Submariners need separate comparisons, as do different GMT generations. A nickname or a similar bezel color is not enough to identify a comparable watch.

Compare Condition and Complete Sets

Case shape, bracelet wear, movement condition and replacement components can change an offer. Boxes, matching papers, spare links and service records add useful context. They should be checked against the watch, rather than treated as authentication on their own.

A watch needing service may receive a different offer from an otherwise similar example with documented recent work. For older pieces, a replacement dial or refinished case can matter as much as surface scratches.

Use Comparable Transactions

Look for recent sales of the same reference and configuration in similar condition. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive; they do not prove a completed sale. Auction results also need context, including fees and the condition of the specific lot.

Consider What You Would Actually Receive

Compare direct purchase offers with expected proceeds after consignment fees, shipping and any agreed service expense. A higher advertised sale price may leave less in your pocket. Your original purchase price also affects whether a later sale represents a gain or a loss.
