Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald Rings: Color and Setting Choices

Start with the Color You Enjoy

Sapphire, ruby and emerald rings offer very different colors and moods. This archive pairs blue, red and green centers with white accent stones so you can compare the effect of a halo, a shaped surround and decorated shoulders. A photograph is useful for discussing style, but it cannot establish a gemstone’s identity, origin or treatment history.

Ask What the Description Means

Do not treat terms such as AAA as a universal gemstone grading system. Ask the seller to explain the color, visible inclusions, cut and transparency of the actual stone. A label alone does not tell you how it will look in different lighting. Expected inclusion patterns also differ among gem varieties; they should not be turned into interchangeable quality grades.

Reports and Treatments

Ask whether a stone is natural or laboratory grown, whether treatments are known, and what documentation accompanies it. A report should be checked against the actual gemstone and the claims being made about it. Geographic origin, treatment status and quality should never be inferred only from a vivid color in an online image.

Settings and Everyday Wear

Look at how much of the stone’s edge is exposed and how high the setting sits above the finger. Durability involves more than resistance to scratching, so ask for care instructions suited to the particular gem and its treatments. Before sizing an existing ring, discuss the setting and accent stones with the jeweler. The gallery preserves earlier inventory as examples of design, not as a current stock list.
