VVS and VS1 Diamonds: Understanding Clarity Differences
Share
VVS and VS1 describe diamond clarity, not a complete ranking of beauty or value. The practical question is whether the differences between two particular stones matter to your eyes and budget. Read the report and inspect the diamonds rather than choosing by an abbreviation alone.
Understand the Grades
GIA explains VVS and VS clarity in terms of inclusions observed by a skilled grader at 10 times magnification. VVS includes VVS1 and VVS2; VS includes VS1 and VS2. VS1 is one grade within that second group.
The nature, size, number and location of characteristics contribute to the assessment. The retained comparison graphic is an illustration, not a laboratory report or proof of how every diamond in a grade will look.

Look Without Magnification Too
Ask to view the stone in ordinary conditions as well as under magnification. Visibility varies with the individual diamond, its size and faceting. Do not assume that every inclusion is visible, or that a grade universally guarantees no visible feature.
If a characteristic concerns you, ask the jeweler to locate it and explain its relevance. Separate cosmetic visibility from any question about durability.

Balance Clarity With Appearance
Clarity alone does not create sparkle. Proportions, faceting and other aspects of cut influence how a diamond handles light. Compare the whole stone, including color, dimensions and how it looks in the proposed setting.
There is no universal price premium between VVS and VS1. Compare current quotes for diamonds with the same origin and similar weight, color, cut characteristics and documentation.

Choose the Difference You Value
You may prefer a higher clarity grade for personal reasons, or prefer to spend elsewhere in the ring. Neither choice guarantees a better resale outcome. Ask our team to show you the differences in actual stones and explain the accompanying reports.
