The Rolex 116523 Cosmograph Daytona is one of the most celebrated chronographs in watchmaking history. Introduced in 1963 as a tool watch for professional racing drivers, the Daytona spent decades as a cult favorite before becoming one of the most sought-after references in the entire Rolex catalog. The 116523 generation, launched in 2000, represented a landmark upgrade: Rolex replaced the hand-wound Zenith Valjoux movement with the in-house Caliber 4130, a COSC-certified automatic chronograph with a column-wheel mechanism and vertical clutch. That movement remains widely praised for its precision and reliability to this day. The Rolesor two-tone configuration, pairing Oystersteel with 18k yellow gold on the case, bezel, and center bracelet links, has long been the choice of collectors who want the Daytona's sporting DNA with a touch of dress-watch warmth.
This particular example presents in exceptional new/old stock condition. The silver dial is clean and crisp, the three subsidiary registers reading at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock as they should on the 116523. The engraved yellow gold tachymeter bezel shows no visible wear whatsoever. Pushers and the crown appear completely pristine. It comes with the original Rolex box and papers dated November 22, 2003, making it a full-set example that's been waiting over two decades for the right home. Finding a two-tone Daytona with original paperwork at this age is genuinely rare.
A new/old stock Daytona with papers is the kind of acquisition that only comes along occasionally. It works equally well as a daily chronograph for the collector who finally pulls the trigger, or as a long-term store of value for someone building a serious watch portfolio. The Rolesor configuration means it transitions from a boardroom meeting to a weekend on the water without missing a beat.
Each piece is fully inspected and authenticated by Diamonds by Raymond Lee in Boca Raton.
