The Rolex 16610 is the reference that defined the modern Submariner Date for nearly two decades. Introduced in 1988 as the successor to the 16800, it remained in production until 2010 when the 116610 took over, making it one of the longest-running Submariner references in history. The 16610 was the first Submariner to receive sapphire crystal as standard and the Triplock crown system, bringing the reference up to Rolex's contemporary engineering standards while retaining the 40mm case size that collectors still regard as the ideal Submariner proportion. It is the reference that built the "Sub" legend for an entire generation of watch buyers.
This example wears the classic combination: matte black dial, matching black unidirectional rotating bezel insert, and a full stainless steel Oyster bracelet. The dial text — "Submariner / 1000ft=300m / Superlative Chronometer / Officially Certified" — is crisp and legible. Luminous index markers and luminous Mercedes hands fill in under low light. The bezel insert shows no significant fading or chipping, the crown is original and undamaged, and the Oyster bracelet retains good density. Light surface wear is visible on the case flanks and bracelet links, fully consistent with a piece that has been worn and appreciated. The Caliber 3135 movement inside is Rolex's gold standard for reliability, with approximately 48 hours of power reserve and in-house COSC chronometer certification.
The 16610 sits at an interesting crossroads in the collector market right now. It is old enough to carry genuine vintage appeal, yet recent enough that service parts are readily available and the movement needs no specialist knowledge to maintain. At under nine thousand dollars, it is one of the most accessible entry points into the Submariner lineage.
