The Rolex Day-Date has worn the title of "President's Watch" since 1956, when it became the first timepiece to display both the day spelled out in full and the date. Reference 228238 is the current 40mm generation, introduced in 2015 to replace the long-running 118238. The larger 40mm case brought a slimmer, more contemporary profile, a completely redesigned movement in the caliber 3255, and new dial options that gave the collection a renewed sense of energy. Exclusive to 18k or platinum, this reference is never produced in steel — the yellow gold case and fluted bezel are a combination Rolex has offered since the very first Day-Date, and they remain the most recognizable expression of the model.
This particular example arrives with an ombré green dial, a color that Rolex reintroduced across several references in recent years to remarkable demand. The green graduates darker at the center and lightens toward the outer edge, giving the dial genuine visual depth. Roman numeral hour markers sit at every position, rendered in applied yellow gold against the green ground, and the full-word day display at 12 o'clock reads clearly in both the photographs and in person. The 18k yellow gold President bracelet, with its three semi-circular links, is in excellent condition throughout, and the dealer handtags remain attached to the bracelet exactly as received from the authorized dealer — papers and card are dated September 30, 2024, making this effectively a brand-new acquisition.
For the collector adding a flagship complication in yellow gold, or for someone purchasing their first Day-Date, it is hard to find a cleaner example of this reference with full documentation at this stage of the market. The green dial is highly sought after and is no longer routinely available at retail, which makes a complete-set piece like this one a meaningful find.
