White Gold vs Platinum Rings: Wear, Cost and Resale
White gold and platinum can both suit an engagement ring. They differ in composition, finish, weight and care. The better choice depends on the particular setting and what you enjoy wearing, not a promise that one metal will always resell for more.
What the Marks Mean
Gold karat describes purity, not weight. For example, 18K indicates 18 parts gold out of 24. White gold combines gold with other metals to produce its color and working properties. A platinum mark such as 950 indicates 950 parts platinum per thousand.

Finish and Daily Wear

Platinum is naturally white and can develop a patina. It can still scratch, wear or become damaged. Neither metal makes a setting maintenance free. Prong design, thickness, alloy and how the ring is worn matter alongside the metal name.
Try Comparable Rings
Compare similar dimensions to judge weight and comfort. Ask about resizing, repairs and any skin sensitivities before ordering. Different designs may behave differently even when made from the same metal.

How Resale Differs from Purchase Price
A buyer considers the complete ring, including its diamond, design, maker, condition and metal content. Metal prices change, and a heavier ring does not automatically produce a better overall offer. Retail labor and design costs may not be recovered.
